How to Draw Your Dragon 5-1: Back Legs

Description

Well, it's been a while, hasn't it? I'm helping to teach an e-friend to draw dragons, and he was having a little trouble with legs, so I decided to make a more in-depth tutorial/reference on them. It... turned out to be bigger than I thought it would be, and also more color-code reliant. XD

So here's 5-1, back legs! Part 5-2, front legs, will be up whenever I get around to it. I may include limb orientation in that, as a seperate work, or just not at all, if this image proves effective in explaining which way things bend (which trips people up all the time, even though all they have to do is check which way their own limbs bend. I guess it's hard to project that to another point of view).

Hopefully this image explains it all pretty well. I tried some new methods of being more clear about what I'm talking about than in my last few references.

It doesn't include feet in the tutorial because I probably shouldn't teach what I don't quite understand yet myself, lol!

For those of you who care to notice: yes, I used a different pelvic structure on this than in my first reference. I used a traditional sauriscian pelvis, because why not? Dragons really can use either structure and most people would be none the wiser.

Protip: if a human stands on tiptoe, they're in digitigrade stance! Couldn't find a place to put this in the image, so here it is in text instead.
